Northern Airports and Marine Operations acts as the lifeline for remote communities in Northern Manitoba, allowing the transportation of medical patients and essential supplies such as food and medication. Marine Operations provides ferry services to the communities through a highly skilled workforce that adheres to regulatory standards to ensure safety and uniformity with provincial, federal, and international regulations.

Duties:

A Captain is required for the M.V. Joe Keeper at York Landing/Split Lake. Under the Supervision of the Marine Operations Superintendent, the incumbent will be responsible for operating a passenger/vehicle motor vessel according to the Department’s routes and schedules in accordance with Transport Canada Marine Safety (TCMS) Regulations and any other applicable Federal and Provincial Regulations, Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Experience operating passenger, vehicle, or commercial motor vessels of 150 gross tonnage or more.

  • Experience enforcing and/or applying Transport Canada Marine Safety Regulations or international marine regulations.

  • Experience in operating and maintaining marine equipment.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Ability to work independently and use good judgement.

  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with diverse levels of staff, contractors and the general public.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively and courteously deal with co-workers, external clients and the general public.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Experience with computerized maintenance management programs

  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Desired:

  • Experience working in northern and remote work sites.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada

  • Must possess a valid Transport Canada approved Master 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Licence

  • Must be able to provide a Transport Canada Medical Examination for the tenure of the term

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5F licence

  • Must be able to perform physical requirements of the job and be able to work in confined spaces, and perform work over/around the water and in adverse weather conditions

  • Must be able to work on a rotational basis in remote locations for extended periods of time

  • Must be willing to travel, endure challenging accommodations, and work extended or irregular hours
